Arts Council reception coming Oct. 13

The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council is holding its next art reception show from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

The Puget Sound Sumi Artists will be honored at the reception.

The PSSA promotes an understanding and appreciation of Japanese art called sumi painting and Asian calligraphy (shodo), according to a release from PSSA.

The group was founded in 1979 and has nearly 80 members all over the Puget Sound. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday in September through June at the Asian Pacific Cultural Center in Tacoma beginning at 11 a.m.

5th District forum

The Greater Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce is hosting a legislative forum Thursday, Oct. 11 featuring all four candidates running for the state House of Representatives in the 5th District.

Position 1 candidates are Chad Magendanz and Bill Ramos and Position 2 are Lisa Callan and Paul Graves.

The candidates will respond to a prepared list of questions as well as answering questions from audience members.

The forum will run from 6:15 to 8 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Tahoma High School.

Maple Valley Happiness Sprinkling coming Oct. 6

On Saturday, Oct. 6 the community is asked to wear yellow — the universal color of happiness and warmth, according to the Facebook event page. At 12:30 p.m., you are welcome to meet at the Maple Valley Safeway where signs and cards with messages of hope will be passed out.

Ten Trails gifts money to community center

The Black Diamond Community Center along with two other organizations received money from Ten Trails following its grand opening Saturday.

The community center received $5,000 while Shop with a Cop and the Enumclaw Schools Foundation each received $2,000.

“This money from Ten Trails is so huge for us,” Cheryl Hanson, Black Diamond Community Center Executive Director, said in a media release. “It allows us to give services to almost anyone who comes in.”

Event scheduled for Oct. 20 at Hallmark store

This year’s Hallmark Keepsake Studio Artists will visit 20 Hallmark stores around the country. Orville Wilson and Terri Steiger will visit Paula’s Hallmark in Issaquah from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.

The featured event piece — Santa’s Sweet Treat Cart — will be available for a limited time only at the Issaquah location, 1175 NW Gilman Boulevard Town and Country Square.
