District offers free screenings
The Kent School District offers free Child Find screenings for children 3-5 years old who may have a disability. Children are screened in the areas of speech and language, vision, hearing, learning and motor development.
All screenings are at various Kent schools. Screenings will be in the areas of language, learning and motor development.
At least one parent must accompany the child to the screening, which take approximately 1½ hours and are conducted by certificated staff.
Screening dates are: Sept. 12, 26; Oct. 10, 17; Nov. 14, 28; Dec. 12; Jan. 9, 30; Feb. 27; March 13, 27; April 24; and May 8.

Back to School applications available
Applications are available Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Black Diamond Community Center for school supplies.
Children within the Enumclaw School District are welcome to apply. Applications must be turned in by Aug. 20. Call the center at 360-886-1011 if you have any questions.
Volunteer naturalists wanted
Interested in learning about wildlife migration in the Cedar River?
Volunteer naturalists receive 20 hours of training from fish and watershed experts and will then spend three weekend days along the river, talking to the public about spawning salmon, natural and human history along the watershed.

Area council meeting notice
The Greater Maple Valley Unincorporated Area Council is holding its monthly meeting from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at the Maple Valley Fire Station, 22300 SE 231st St.
The meeting will discuss the proposed reopening of the John Henry coal mine.
Invited guest speakers include representatives from the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Ecology, the county Department of Permitting and Environmental Review, Puget Soundkeeper Alliance and the applicant Pacific Coast Coal Company. For more information, visit www.gmvuac.org.
Summer showcase at ice rink
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 the Kent Valley Figure Skating Club is hosting a Summer Showcase exhibition.
Skaters of all levels and ages will come together to perform.
Admission is $5. All proceeds go toward benefiting the club.

Community meals changes locations
The Community Meal Program that has been hosted by Grace Roads Church in Black Diamond will not be served at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Black Diamond.
The change began Aug. 1.
The community meals are served weekly on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
These meals are free and open to the public.
Local choir performed with rock band
Kentwood High School’s choir was invited to sing with Foreigner at the White River Amphitheatre on July 27.
Twenty choir students including past, present and future joined the band on stage to perform “I Wanna Know What Love Is.”
