Volunteers needed at community center

The Black Diamond Community Center is looking for volunteers to help during the senior lunch program on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Preparation begins are 10 a.m. and lunch is served at noon.

Volunteers may hold a variety of different roles including — prepping the food, serving seniors with coffee and goodies, replacing silverware, clearing tables or cleaning the kitchen.

To volunteer, you must have a food worker card, fill out a volunteer application and pass a background check.

Register now for police academy

Registration is now open for the Community Police Academy with the King County Sheriff’s Office in Maple Valley and Covington.

The academy helps the community better understand police operations through education and interaction.

Classes are held every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning March 29 through May 31. The class is free and space is limited.

Applicants must be 18 years or older and are subject to a background check.

Orientation scheduled for late March

Green River College’s Small Business Center is holding two orientations this month.

The first is 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at Covington City Hall and the second orientation is 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Columbia Bank in Maple Valley.

Senior league baseball tryout dates

The Puget Sound Senior Baseball League is holding tryouts for baseball players 19 years and older during the month of March.

Divisions are divided based on age and skill level.

Tryout dates and locations are below:

• Sunday, March 4 and Sunday, March 11 at Interlake High School in Bellevue

• Saturday, March 17 at Bellevue College

• Saturday, March 24 at Russell Road Park in Kent

Greater Maple Valley council meeting

The Greater Maple Valley Unincorporated Area Council will hold its monthly meeting from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, March 5 at Maple Valley fire station located at 22300 SE 231st.

During this month’s meeting Larry Baumgart, president of the Maple Valley Farmers Market, will give a presentation. Other topics will also be discussed during Monday’s meeting.

Wastemobile collection coming soon

The Wastemobile, a collection service for household hazardous waste, is coming to the Kent-Covington area March 9 to 11.

The Wastemobile will be at Kent Fire Station No. 75, 15635 SE 272nd, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day.

Residents can drop off household hazardous waste items including pesticides, oil-based paints, automotive products (oil, antifreeze, lamps, etc.), fluorescent bulbs/tubes and other items without a charge. The service is pre-paid through garbage and sewer utility fees.

Calling all artists

The Black Diamond Arts Alliance is sponsoring a show Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The exhibition will take place at the Masonic Lodge in Black Diamond alongside the Laurel Chapter OES Spring Plant Sale. The exhibit will remain at the lodge until July 28.

The deadline to enter is April 18 by mail or April 23 by email. Art pieces will need to be delivered by 10 a.m. April 28.
