The Covington City Council has created a Covington Youth Council, a release from the city stated.
The city is currently looking for adults to be leaders to the members of the youth council.
The release said the purpose of the youth council “is to involve youth in local government, increase volunteerism among youth in civic affairs, increase communication with youth in the community, involve youth in planning youth activities in Covington and to serve as an advisory body to the City Council on matters dealing with youth in the community.”
Anyone who is interested in mentoring these members can request an application. The release stated that there will be at “least two non-voting adult leader positions.”
An application can be requested by emailing City Clerk Sharon Scott at sscott@covingtonwa.gov.
The city is requesting that all applications be returned by Friday, Dec. 2. The City Council will review the applications and request in-person interviews if need be.
The Covington Youth Council will be made up of 15 to 18 years old. They will also either attend school or live in Covington. The release added, they can also live within a three mile radius of the city limits.
Scott said the goal is to have 15 to 20 members on the youth council. She added the number of members may “fluctuate from year to year depending on current issues.”
Advertising for youth positions, Scott said, is expected to happen in early 2017.
Anyone interested in being on the youth council can submit an application for the City Council and adult leaders and the two groups will conduct interviews.
Scott added, the final decision will be made by the City Council.
