Valley Pioneer Passes Away

Ione Herrin, a longtime resident of the Shadow Lake area of Maple Valley passed away on December 22, 2008. A Catholic celebration of her life was held at St. Barbara Catholic Church on December 27, 2008. Survivors include: daughter, Kathy Herrin-DiNicola (Fred) of Maple Valley; sons, Louie T. Herrin (Sandy) of Olympia and David Herrin (Judy) of Spokane. She also leaves grandchildren, John Herrin(Jennifer) of Olympia, Vicki Bowker (Jeff) of Wasilla, AK, Dave Herrin, of Spokane, Dan Herrin (Jessica) of Old Town, ID , Jodi Anderson (Steve) of Maple Val-ley; and 10 great-grandchildren. A reception in her honor was held at the Greater Maple Valley Community Center, following her burial.Ione attended Tahoma schools and graduated from Tahoma High school in 1937. She married Louie T. Herrin also a Maple Valley pioneer in 1937. He predeceased her in 1978. She lived in the same house near Shadow Lake from 1937 until 2007 when she moved to Fountain Court in Maple Valley.Ione has been very active in the community her entire life. She was the Manager and Chief Chef for the hot lunch program at the Tahoma School District for 30 years. She retired in 1978. She held several leadership positions at the Cedar Grange. Ione also was active at the Maple Valley Community center. She was Chairwoman for many years and also did various volunteer works for the center. In 2001 she was Senior Citizen of the year and honored at Maple Valley Days and was Grand Marshal of the parade.In lieu of flowers Ione and the family had requested donations be made to the Maple Valley Community Center, Senior Program or the Maple Valley Historical Society.
