Welcome! We hope this new column about the Lake Wilderness Arboretum in Maple Valley will create more awareness of the Arboretum and its programs.

With each edition, you’ll learn about this quiet retreat that’s also a robust Northwest ecosystem and outdoor classroom. Walking paths wind through botanical collections, cultivated gardens and native forest featuring Western azaleas, fuchsias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas and hellebores among the pines.

Right now, you can find the lovely white Snowdrop flower in bloom.

“Snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, is a very adorable spring perennial,” says garden manager Susan Goodell. “They are among the first bulbs to bloom as winter ends and are such a welcome sight in the garden.”

The Arboretum offers a wide variety of opportunities for members, the local community, service groups and youth groups to volunteer. Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome.

The Lake Wilderness Arboretum is located at 22520 S.E. 248th in Maple Valley. The arboretum is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Entrance and parking are free. Docent tours are available.
