Balance was the key for Kentwood in a three game victory over Kent-Meridian on the volleyball court on Tuesday night.

Kentwood’s trio of attackers — Mele Halahuni, Mikaela Ballou and Lauren Hackett — pounded out an even number of kills set up by senior setter Kacie Seims.

With the victory, Kentwood remains undefeated on the season at 7-0 in South Puget League North play and 12-0 overall, as well as clinched its first division title since 2008.

Game one was a back and forth battle until the Conquerors took a 9-8 lead, ultimately winning 25-16, despite the Royals efforts to close in.

Kent-Meridian had different ideas in the second game when it jumped out to a 4-0 lead then extended it to 14-9. Kentwood battled back, though, and took control of the game to make it 21-20 on a kill by Ballou. The Conks scored four straight points from there to win it 25-20.

In the third game, Kentwood took control when it grabbed a 7-5 lead, from which it never looked back. The Conquerors won the third game 25-19 though the Royals, led by outside hitter Chloe Watson, never gave up.

Watson, who has a hammering attack above the net and a wicked soft floating serve, had nine kills and seven digs for Kent-Meridian. Setter Deidreanna Laban tallied 17 assists.

For Kentwood, the balance came from all corners of the court.

Ballou had nine kills, Hackett led the attack with 15 kills as well as adding four blocks while Kalle Peterson had a pair of kills and five aces, Sarah Toeaina had five kills, Emily Altobelli had 10 digs and a pair of aces, Seims added two kills and two aces to her 31 assists, Tess Manthou had 10 digs and Halahuni added 11 kills.

Kentwood plays Tuesday at Kentlake in its final game of the regular season.
