Yet being a member of the Arboretum’s Board of Directors gives her an opportunity to indulge her lifelong passion.

“Gardening is beyond a hobby with me,” Barnes said. “It’s almost a lifestyle.”

In this interview, Barnes tells us what she loves most about the Arboretum, and why she enjoys meeting fellow Arboretum enthusiasts:

Why are you involved with the Arboretum?

“It’s a wonderful asset to the community and deserves to be supported. “

What do you think is the Arboretum’s greatest contribution to the community?

“It’s an open space where community members can savor peace and solitude, and admire the extensive plantings and natural surroundings.”

What’s your favorite garden?

“The Smith Mossman Garden. My family has owned a rhododendron nursery in Portland since 1926. Britt Smith and Frank Mossman were friends with my Dad, and frequent visitors to the nursery in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. I try to do my part to continue their legacy.”

Meet Barnes this Saturday in the Arboretum’s booth at the Maple Valley Farmers Market.
