Representatives of a national developer of shopping centers next week will formally reveal a proposal for a shopping center in Covington that would be anchored by a Target store.

Gene Spitzer, vice president of investments for Regency Centers, said he’ll discuss plans publicly during a City Council meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The new shopping center is proposed for land behind the Fred Meyer and Safeway stores near Southeast 272nd Street.

Other than Target being the anchor retailer, Spitzer didn’t disclose other businesses that would be included in the shopping center. He said specifics about the project would be saved for the public discussion at the council meeting.

Spitzer did say that this would be the first such project in this area for Regency Centers.

Regency develops, owns and operates what it calls “grocery-anchored and community shopping centers,” according to its Web site.

The company has developed or purchased more than 450 shopping centers, the Web site stated, including 187 opened since 2000 at a cost of $3 billion.

Overall, 50 projects in 20 states are under construction, according to Regency. Construction started in July for a shopping center in Brea, Calif. with 351,982 square feet of retail space and a 158,648 square-foot Target store.

Regency’s corporate headquarters is in Jacksonville, Fla. The company’s 21 regional offices include one in Bellevue.
