The Elk Run Farm, formerly part of the Elk Run Golf Course, had it’s first harvest on July 7. The farm is four acres and with the support of Elk Run, the city of Maple Valley, King County, local food bank directors and the United Way of King County, the farm was able to come to life.

According to the farm’s website, the farm has the potential to produce roughly 60,000 pounds of produce for the South King County emergency food system, host field trips for students, present employment training programs, introduce elements of local food system economic growth into some high schools and improve the public safety of the area.

It took about a year and a half to prepare the land where the farm was going to be located. Volunteers helped clear the land, installed a water pump and planted some items like garlic. The farm is made to accommodate large groups of volunteers and at the first harvest, about 50 volunteers showed up. The farm is hosting drop-in work parties every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
