After waking up on March 27 to the news their trailer full of equipment was stolen including their robot Xcalibear, the Tahoma Bear Metal robotics team found some good news the morning of March 30.

Around 6 a.m., the robot was discovered outside Tahoma High School.

“A collective sigh of relief has been heard across the Kingdom of Bear Metal to have their fearless leader return,” the team wrote on their Facebook page.

They added there is some damage due to condensation but other than that “it is largely intact.”

There were reportedly some parts missing from the robot and none of the tools from the stolen trailer were returned, Public Information Officer Steve Stocker said from the Auburn Police Department.

The Auburn Police Department is handling the case because the trailer was stolen out of Auburn and King County Sheriff’s Office recovered it in the Pacific Raceway’s parking lot, according to Stocker.

Security footage showed Xcalibear was dropped off around 12:55 a.m. and according to Bear Metal’s Facebook page there isn’t enough information to make out the make or model of the vehicle.

Bear Metal said on their page, “FIRST has ruled that we can compete with Xcalibear this weekend.”

It has to dry out and then the team could get back to work preparing it for competition.

Stocker said this is an active case and the detective assigned to it is looking for leads. As of the morning of April 1 there were no leads reported, he added.

Tahoma High’s Alex Gibbs sent an email Tuesday stating, “This weekend at Auburn High School, Bear Metal competed with our competition bot that was stolen…. The robot performed wonderfully. By the end of qualification matches we were the second placed team. We fought hard but our shooter broke due to and encoder issue…. We were defeated in semifinals but we won the Engineering Inspiration Award for our service in our community. We are now preparing for competition at district championship in Portland.
