Daylight saving time is time to check the fire alarm battery | Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety

Daylight saving time has arrived and that means more daylight in the evening hours. Not only do we need to change our clocks but we need to check or change the batteries in our smoke detectors as well.

Time is not on our side when it comes to smoke and fire. Smoke alarms do save hundreds of lives each year but only those that are working.

What is the difference between Ionization and Photoelectric smoke alarms?

  • Ionization Smoke Alarms – Generally are more effective at detecting flaming fires, which consume combustibles quickly and spread rapidly. Sources of these fires include paper burning in a wastebasket, or grease fires on a stove.
  • Photoelectric Smoke Alarms – Generally are more effective at detecting smoldering fires, which smolder for hours before bursting into flame. Sources of the fires include cigarette smoldering in couches or bedding.

What is the best smoke detector to purchase?

  • Ionization & Photoelectric Smoke Alarm – For maximum protection, install both types of smoke alarms on every level of the home.
