Valley Girls & Guys founder Tina McDonough delivered wine barrels to businesses in South King County as part of the team’s latest fundraiser.

“First time doing this, so, we’re very excited,” McDonough wrote in an email. “One hundred percent (of proceeds) will go to Susan G. Komen for the cure!”

The team, which nine months ago was the largest in the state as well as the top fundraiser, was formed in 2007 to walk the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s 3-Day Walk after McDonough lost a close friend to breast cancer.

Since then the team — which had just four members to start with — has grown exponentially as has its fundraisers.

In preparation for its I Pink I Can event Thursday evening at DaVine Wine Bar in Maple Valley, McDonough procured seven wine barrels and found artists to add their own touch with the only request that there be some kind of cause-related ribbon incorporated, McDonough wrote in an email.

The barrels were delivered by McDonough to several locations including Valley Buick GMC in Auburn, DaVine, City Perk, Fred Meyer, Daniel Ross Salon and Skin.

The plan, McDonough wrote, was to auction off the wine barrels at the event.

A percentage of sales of beer and wine are also slated to go to Valley Girls & Guys fundraising efforts.

In addition, there were more than a dozen items up for raffle.

Since beginning the team, McDonough wrote, it has raised more than $1 million for the Komen Foundation. Of the money raised at the 3-Day, 75 percent goes to fund research to find a cure for breast cancer, while 25 percent goes to the local affiliate to provide education and pay for mammograms for women who can’t afford them.
