Emerald Downs has a new riding sensation.
He’s apprentice jockey Pedro Terrero, a 25-year-old native of Guanajuato, Mexico. He rode four winners Saturday, Cee the Lady punctuating the spree in the $13,100 Woodford Reserve Purse, and upped his two-day count to seven wins and his season total to 20. Terrero’s 31.7 win percentage tops the charts, and he’s threatening to topple Juan Gutierrez, the meet’s leading rider with 22 wins.
Saturday, Terrero became only the second jockey this season to ride four winners on a card while leapfrogging defending champion Ricky Frazier into a second-place tie with Gallyn Mitchell. With five scheduled mounts Sunday, Terrero needs three wins to tie Frazier’s mark of 10 wins in a three-day week.
Terrero teamed with trainer Frank Lucarelli to win the second race with Alittlebitfamous ($4) and the sixth with long shot Amante Mio ($24.20). He then rallied Dirty Shirt ($8) from fifth for a one-length victory in the seventh, setting the stage for a smashing victory in the feature race.
Claimed for $5,000 out of an 11-length victory last month, Cee the Lady was given a confident boost in class to the $17,500 level, and she responded beautifully for her new connections—trainer Vann Belvoir and owner Jerry Elrod.
Gunned to the lead by Terrero, Cee the Lady dueled with a come-backing Maker Happy through fractions of :21 2/5 and :43 4/5, disposed of that rival into the lane, and drew away for a 2 ¾-length victory over Mizzen You in 1:09 4/5 for six furlongs. Cee the Lady paid $7.20, $3.60 and $3.20.
Mizzen You, Inoel Beato riding, paid $3.60 and $3.60. Nina Win, ridden by Cassie Papineau, finished third and paid $3.60.
Interviewed in his favorite new place, the winner’s circle, Terrero said he had given little thought to things like track records, specifically Papineau’s mark of 70 wins by an apprentice jockey set last year.
“No, I don’t think about the future, I’m just thinking about today,” Terrero said. “And things went well today.”
