Covington Rotary is putting on a food drive for Maple Valley Food Bank in two weeks.
Rotarians will collect food from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 4 in front of Fred Meyer in downtown Covington.
Liz Collins, a member of the Rotary, said they selected the Maple Valley Food Bank because it serves residents in Covington as well as Maple Valley, Black Diamond, Ravensdale and Hobart.
“We decided to do it this time of year because usually the food drives are around Thanksgiving and in the fall,” Collins said. “We know that there’s a really big need right now so we just decided to do it just before Easter just to try and replenish some of their stock on their shelves.”
Collins said that they will accept the usual dry goods, canned foods, and will have lists available for those who wish to purchase items in Fred Meyer during the food drive.
“Our goal is to try and fill the truck,” Collins said. “It’s a delivery truck so it’s not huge. If we exceed that, then that’s wonderful.”
There’s also a special focus on items for babies such as diapers and baby food, among other things, Collins said.
“Any monetary donations are very welcome, as well, because they also provide assistance for power bills, rent, that kind of thing,” she said. “There’s a greater need for that so monetary donations are very welcome.”
