Kentlake’s girls swim and dive team heads into the league championship meet this weekend at Rogers High School undefeated and the SPSL North league champions.

The Falcons went 5-0 this year under the direction of first year coach Brad Williams after going 3-2 last year.

“I think we definitely surprised some of the swimmers,” said Kentlake senior Erin Jones. “We surprised me.”

Co-captain Kyndal Phillips said that Mount Rainier was the toughest meet for the team.

“They’ve been some really good competitors,” Phillips said. “They’ve always been really tough to beat.”

Phillips said the team had a pretty good idea they would win the league after winning the meet against Mount Rainier.

“We were trying not to get too big headed, but still be excited,” Phillips said.

Williams said he was impressed by the girls’ work ethic and camaraderie throughout the season.

“I guess willingness is the one word in everything that we’ve done,” Williams said. “Not always is there that sense of one, and supporting one another and I’ve really been pleased with what I’ve seen this year.”

Both Phillips and Jones attributed the teams’ success to Williams’ coaching style and the hard work of the teams’ swimmers and divers.

“He’s an amazing coach,” Jones said. “He’s so supportive and we have great captains.”

Two of the teams’ three divers have already qualified for the district meet the weekend of Nov. 1.

Williams said having three good divers proved an asset to the team and contributed to the Falcons’ wins.

“Our divers got us a lot of points this years,” Phillips said. “It was cool having divers this year, and really good divers.”

Kentlake dive coach Katie Longto said she was impressed by the progress the divers made as well as how they work together and challenge each other.

“They’re awesome,” Longto said. “They’re a joy to coach. It’s nice to see how they’ve come together as a team.”

Jones said overall the atmosphere of the team was different this year.

“It was a different feel, varsity and JV weren’t so disconnected,” Jones explained. “We were able to bond more and that brought power to the meets.”

The one thing that Jones said she wants people to know about Kentlake swimming is that it’s a place where everyone is welcome and a part of the team.

“Whether you’re the best swimmer at Kentlake or you’ve never been in the pool it’s a family environment,” Jones said.

Heading into the postseason during the coming weeks, Phillips said she wants the school community to know about the talent the Falcons have in the pool.

“We are the only team (at Kentlake) that went undefeated,” Phillips said.
