A man was found dead in a Covington home Sunday evening after a long standoff following an alleged domestic violence incident with his wife in Renton.

The series of events began around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, according King County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Cindi West, at a house in the 17100 block of Southeast 134th Street in the East Renton Highlands. The man allegedly threatened his wife with a gun, West wrote in an email Monday, then drove to a home in the Covington Firs neighborhood.

Tuesday morning West wrote in an email that the man lived in the house in the East Renton Highlands with his wife, children and her parents.

“The suspect pulled a gun on his wife and then fled to his parents house (in Covington),” West wrote Tuesday. “A deputy saw the suspect drive toward the house and tried to stop the vehicle but the suspect pulled into the driveway of the house and held a gun to his head. He held the gun to his head for a while, then went on the porch of the house still holding the gun to his head. Deputies tried to talk him into putting the gun down but he refused.”

West wrote that the man then barricaded himself in the house and would not leave. He was alone. Negotiators were called to the scene as was the county’s SWAT team.

Around 4:30 p.m. deputies heard what sounded like a gunshot from inside the house.

“A robot was deployed — with a camera — and the man appeared to be injured or dead,” West wrote. “(SWAT) entered the house and saw that the man had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Medics confirmed the man was dead.”

West added that nearby homes were evacuated and some streets in the neighborhood were closed in the interest of the safety of residents in the area.
