The city of Maple Valley’s rehabilitation of the Lake Wilderness Lodge was honored at the 10th annual John D. Spellman Awards for Achievement in Historic Preservation ceremony May 21 at the Carol Edwards Center in Woodinville.

The awards ceremony celebrated National Historic Preservation Month with awards honoring achievement in four categories: restoration, rehabilitation, education and advocacy and lifetime achievement.

The city was honored for “Exemplary Achievement in Historic Preservation” in the rehabilitation category. The city spent three years and $2.2 million dollars to rehabilitate the exterior and interior of the Lake Wilderness Lodge. The city received two grants, a $1.5 million state Community, Trade and Economic Development grant and a $7,500 King County 4Culture grant, to complement the $700,000 city investment to make this preservation project a reality.

King County Executive Dow Constantine presided over this year’s ceremony.

The awards program was named after the first King County executive, John D. Spellman, who helped establish the King County Historic Preservation Program and Landmarks Commission.
