The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra presented its summer music camp concert titled Epic. The orchestra performed a variety of movie theme selections including "Over the Rainbow," "The Fellowship of the Ring," "Hedgewig's Theme" and pieces from Star Wars. The concert was Friday, Aug. 20 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra presented its summer music camp concert titled Epic.

The orchestra performed a variety of movie theme selections including “Over the Rainbow,” “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “Hedgewig’s Theme” and pieces from Star Wars.

The concert was Friday, Aug. 20 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

The orchestra also announced it 2010-2011 season audition schedule.

Auditions are scheduled for 3-7 p.m. Aug. 25, 26, and 30 and 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 1. Auditions will be at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 23855 S.E. 216th St. Maple Valley. There is a $10 fee for auditions.

Students should prepare a 2-minute solo piece that reflects their playing abilities. They will also be expected to sight read during the audition. Students wishing to audition for debut orchestra may prepare a 1-minute solo or an excerpt from a band or orchestra book.

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony boasts four orchestra programs. The beginning strings program is for the budding musician who would like to learn to play the violin, viola, or cello. The debut orchestra is a new group designed for the student with one to three years of playing experience and is open to students who play strings, brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments. The music and curriculum are geared toward building confidence and skill in playing and performing in a group setting.

The philharmonic orchestra is designed with the developing musician in mind. The music and curriculum are geared toward nurturing the young musician in skill and performance, generally two to four years playing experience.

The symphony orchestra is for advanced students who are looking to be challenged musically with exciting performance opportunities. The symphony orchestra students have more than four years of playing experience.

This season is shaping up to be orchestra’s biggest and brightest season with exciting performance opportunities including local area events like the Maple Valley tree lighting, Waltz Gala Ball, the Seattle Thunderbirds game and and the Fourth of July fireworks,
