Lisa Mocquet of Maple Valley will wear out her sneakers this weekend at the Seattle Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust.

After months of training and fund-raising, Mocquet, a teacher at Rock Creek Elementary School, will walk 60 miles in three days to raise awareness and funds for critical research and community outreach programs.

Mocquet said in a letter to friends and colleagues that as a teacher, she has been “blessed by knowing, caring for, and touching the lives of many children and is touched deeply by the personal and academic successes of her students.” Likewise, she has been deeply saddened and “brought to tears” by the pain and suffering of children she has taught who have lost a loved one to breast cancer.

Macquet said she is dedicating her 60-mile walk to the children and families she knows “that have already suffered from the affects of cancer.”

Walkers in this weekend’s event will cover about 20 miles a day at their own pace, starting on Friday and wrapping up on Sunday. The walkers will be supported by hundreds of volunteer crew members who will provide meals, liquid and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and 24-hour medical services.

Participants begin training months in advance, as well as working to raise the $2,200 minimum to walk. Mocquet has set a goal of at least $5,000. Donations can still be made at www.the3day.org/goto/LisaMocquet.

Each walker is supported by coaches, clinics, meetings and online assistance in all aspects of training and fund-raising.
