Downed tree causes electrical wires to land on car with woman and children inside

A downed tree caused wires to fall on the vehicle. Firefighters were able to call the woman on her cell phone and guide her and her kids out of the car safely

At 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, a call came in to Mountain View Fire & Rescue reporting electrical wires on a car on Thomas Road SE in the Lake Morton-Berrydale area. Due to high winds, a tree came down on some electrical wires and the wires then came down on the vehicle.

A woman and her children were in the car. Firefighters were able to call the woman on her cell phone and guide her and her kids out of the car safely, with no injuries.

Tim Perciful, public information officer for the fire district, said the most important thing for someone to do in that situation is to stay in the car, which is exactly what she did.

“You put yourself at more risk when you get out of your car,” he said.

According to Puget Sound Energy’s website, the downed tree has caused a power outage for about 20 customers. Power is not expected to come back on until late Wednesday evening. Thomas Road, between Covington-Sawyer Road and Auburn-Black Diamond Road, will remain closed until crews have completed repairs.

High winds are expected to last until Thursday night for surrounding areas.
